Prune Before Spring
Prune deciduous shrubs and trees before buds begin to swell....OR, take advantage of early blooms and use some branches in cut flower arrangements. Some species that are great for forcing branches to bloom indoors are quince, deciduous magnolias, and Forsythia.
Winter is the best time for corrective pruning of trees, so reach out to licensed arborists for bids. They are busy during this time of year, so try to get into their schedules as early as possible.

The Natives Hunt
Many natives do not like to live in pots very long, so nurseries tend to have them available in late winter into early spring.
Plant them early to avoid long-term stays in tight living environments like small pots.
More and more California nurseries are supplying landscapers and gardeners with native plants, so this is a good time to pick up some information found below.

The English in California
So many choices during this time of year, but a personal favorite that does well in Northern California are the David Austin varieties. Check your local nurseries, or find them online from mail order companies.

Divide and Conquer
Divide and replant Cymbidiums too large for their pots

Aspiring Asparagus
Try something different in your raised planters.
Asparagus can be found at nurseries when fruit trees are also available. Need help getting started? See the link below.
